The Power Of Fostering A Senior Dog
Giving Senior Dogs a Second Change at Sedona Shepherd
Today marks a special milestone in my journey with Sedona Shepherd Sanctuary— my final day temporarily fostering Miss Pretty, affectionately known as Nox. I’m incredibly grateful to have had the last five days with her, especially since I had today off to spend quality time together, away from the hustle and bustle of work. It’s been a transformative experience. Nox has rekindled a spark in my heart and filled my home with sunshine once again after losing Dràgo, a Sedona alumnus, one year ago.
But as I prepare to pass her into the capable hands of her full-time foster mom, I find myself reflecting on the deeper purpose behind my fostering journey. It’s clear to me now that my next chapter must focus on advocating for a group of dogs often overlooked and underserved: our seniors.
The Urgent Need for Senior Fosters
Senior dogs like Nox are gentle, wise, and deserving of love just as much as any young pup. Yet, they often sit in shelters, waiting in silence, their stories left unspoken. Many are passed by in favor of younger, more energetic dogs, leaving them to face extended stays that chip away at their hope of moving on to their next journey.
This is where foster families play a crucial role. By opening their hearts and homes to senior dogs, fosters provide comfort, dignity, and the love they deserve in their twilight years. Plus, they are often trained and housebroken. Fostering isn’t just about giving a dog a temporary home — it’s about giving them a second chance to feel loved and valued. We all want to feel loved and valued.
Foster Success and Making a Difference
I truly believe I will be a foster success because my heart is committed to these precious souls. My goal is to give seniors like Nox a life filled with love, happiness, and peace. While I know she would be a wonderful companion, my true calling is to dedicate myself to helping more seniors find comfort and companionship in their final chapters.
Healing Through Compassion
Fostering Nox has also been a healing journey for me. After losing my beloved Ojo, Jaxon, and Dràgo at such young ages so close together, caring for these wise, quiet souls has and will continue to help mend my heart. Their unspoken love and gentle wisdom remind me of the importance of compassion and hope.
Join Us in Making a Difference
Every senior dog deserves to feel loved, cherished, and dignified. They have so much to teach us about resilience, grace, and unconditional love. At Sedona Shepherd, we rely heavily on the generosity and dedication of our foster families. Your commitment can save a life, not just for now, but for the days and years to come.
If you’ve ever thought about fostering, I encourage you to consider opening your heart to a senior dog. Together, we can make a profound difference and honor the worth of every dog, no matter their age.
Thank you for supporting Sedona Shepherd and our mission to give our senior friends the dignity and love they so richly deserve. As we always say, “Love doesn’t keep track of the years.”
